Q: What is the trend of outdoor colthes?

A: Of all the outdoor clothing materials, Gore-tex is undoubtedly the loudest. Gore-tex is also one of the most widely available online, and there have been fewer misrepresentations of the material over the years. More than a decade ago on 8264, there was a lot more debate about Gore-tex and other similar technologies like Event than there is now, which shows how little people knew about the technology. There is much less debate now, and the understanding of this waterproof technology is much more mature. Here are a few points that are less discussed online:

a) Strictly speaking, only PTFE film (the latest is PE film) is made by Gore-tex. The top and bottom of Gore-tex fabric are actually made by other dye houses.

b) The waterproofing of the whole Gore-tex fabric is actually a system, that is to say, it is not achieved by PTFE membrane alone. For example, the surface cloth needs to be treated with water repellent. The technology of water repellent comes from a top 500 company. If the fabric waterproof is relatively poor, it is impossible to achieve good waterproof by PTFE film alone. So I think Gore-tex insists on selling the finished fabric, rather than selling PTFE film separately, which is also considered to be more conducive to the control of the overall waterproof fabric, after all, consumers buy a jacket, will not separately test the water resistance of the middle layer of film, more to see the water resistance of the whole garment.

c) PTFE film and fabric bonding is with a special glue, this glue not only stick firmly (PTFE film because the surface can be very low, the general glue can not stick), but also water resistance.

d) Waterproof and breathable is always a contradiction, it is impossible to have both. It is true that Gore-tex has been promoting waterproof and breathable, but Gore-tex has never made the "sense" of breathable very clear. In addition, everyone has different metabolism and different amount of sweat. Therefore, some people feel stuffy when wearing the same Gore-tex jacket, while others feel fine. I'm not going to list breathability indicators, but you can find them all online. What I'm saying is that these metrics are not a perfect substitute for the actual feel of what you're wearing, but should be used as a guide. And compared to ordinary fabrics, such as shirts and Polo shirts, those figures are not enough to look at. It may be easier to understand for many students who are not familiar with Gore-tex fabrics.

e) Gore-tex fabric cannot support most clothing designs, only suitable for a small class of clothing. This is because the water-resistant treatment of the fabric interacts with other processes used to make the fabric and clothing. For example, making water-resistant fabrics is not friendly to printing, and the fabric weave and yarn have a big impact on the effect of water-resistant. There are only a few fabrics that are suitable for water-resistant treatment, which is why the look of Gore-tex hasn't changed much over the years. In addition, good waterproof clothing must not have pinholes, can only use a special double-sided tape to bond the fabric, which has a great impact on the cutting and profile of clothing.
